Shakespeare to Tour, Thanks to N.E.A.

April 23, 2003
By BRUCE WEBER

Starting in September the National Endowment for the Arts will be
spreading Shakespeare around the United States in Falstaffian doses.

The Shakespeare in American Communities project, which is to be
officially unveiled today (the 439th anniversary of Shakespeare's
presumed birthday) will bring professional-quality performances of some
of his fundamental works, accompanied by educational programs, to some
100 small and midsize American cities in all 50 states.

Doubtless others will send alert SHAKSPER to this article, which I am
sending direct from the NYT web site. There should appear a summary and
a link below. However, it will probably not contain the very last
paragraph, and I find Dana Goia's comment a teaser:

[In answer to 'why Shakespeare and not an American or at least someone
now living]

"First of all I think it's impossible to understand American culture or
American theater without understanding Shakespeare," Mr. Gioia said.
"And this is just the first of what I hope will be a series of large
theatrical tours that will eventually move into American drama. But the
right place to begin is where American drama begins, which is with
Shakespeare."

Wow! Not just American theatre, but American culture. Implies there's
more to it than just Shakespop.

I'll never to that again, i.e. email a list direct from the NYT, but
presumably Hardy will excise all the ads that came in with it.

There may or may not be some significance to the fact that this article
is #20 out of 25 most e-mailed articles today.
