Subject: Bring on the Clowns
Down's Clowns remarks may be considered in conjunction with the essay by
John C. Meagher, "The Stage Directions, Overt and Covert, of Hamlet
5.1", in Stage Directions in Hamlet, New Essays and New Directions
(2003). (Full reference escapes my memory).
This discusses character appellation differences (and therefore role)
between Q1/Q2F. His hypothetical pedant-editor footnote S.D. revision
"Enter Clown and another person, evidently not of the same occupation"
gave me a laugh and another pause for thought, as I'm looking at such
matters for other reasons.
Best wishes,
Graham Hall
