I believe there are two issues here: the region code, which often can be
modified as Haddon Judson points out below, and PAL vs NTSC. Most
European DVDs are in PAL format while in North America they are NTSC.
Unless your DVD player can also handle PAL, just changing the region
code won't give a satisfactory result. They are two mutually
incompatible television systems:
525/60 (NTSC) or 625/50 (PAL/SECAM). I have heard that most DVD drives
sold in Europe can do both, but most sold in North America can only play
NTSC. TVs are also usually either NTSC or PAL. You would need a TV
that can also handle the PAL standard. Most can't. Although front
projection TVs such as the new Infocus X1 usually can.
