Subject: Moderating SHAKSPER: You Can't Please All of the People
                All of the Time

Dear SHAKSPEReans,

I would like to make a few comments about my role as moderator of this
conference.

In April 2000, I wrote, ". . . I believe that the membership has as much
responsibility as I do in moderating SHAKSPER" (SHK 11.0704). This
remains my position. I "lightly" edit the digests and "lightly" moderate
the discussions; I do not expect to be held responsible for every
misspelling or ill-phrased remark I let through: "Although SHAKSPER is a
moderated discussion list, the opinions expressed on it are the sole
property of the poster, and the editor assumes no responsibility for
them."

I do not permit postings overtly advocating Anti-Stratfordian opinions.
These discussions have had their day on this list, and with other venues
to argue the issues I simply to not have the time or the desire to let
the debate occupy SHAKSPER. In recent months, Anti-Stratfordians have
been posting fairly regularly to SHAKSPER. I have "published" some and
refused others. The ones I have let through I seldom understood. My hope
was that many of these posts would simply be ignored and that others
would be responsibly answered by those with the interest and knowledge
to do so.

All I ask is for civility and self-moderation. Barring that, I ask that
the members speak up when they feel someone has overstepped the bounds
of propriety. As some of the messages to follow will show this has been
the case with reactions to one of Friday's posts. This is what I want to
encourage.

Obviously, I do not agree with everything I distribute. Also, I
certainly am not perfect in my choices of what I reject and what I send
out, and I welcome any private correspondence from members on what they
consider appropriate and inappropriate for SHAKSPER.

Hardy
