Here's a choice of single volume editions not likely to be well
received: the Signet Classics. I find these conflated editions of the
texts, with updated critical excerpts (including feminist readings), to
be quite effective for undergraduates. They certainly do not match the
recent scholarship of the Norton, but they offer a critical variety I
find welcome. And the notes are generally adequate, as are the source
excerpts. Good white space too. I supplement them with a web page:
