Comment: Re: SHK 14.2275 LION
I guess I am one of the 'have-nots', hence my ignorant assumption that
EEBO is, like LION, a database of text files. Image capture does require
significantly more memory. It is an inefficient way of storing texts,
although I understand there is a project in progress to produce text
files. Even so, with hard-drives at 250GB now cheaply available on the
consumer market, space is hardly an issue for any kind of data storage
(125000 texts at 10mb each will be, I guess, 1250GB or five high-spec
pcs). Having looked in to EEBO and LION a little more, I have to admit
that I was wrong about the price. The last time I got my librarian to
look into subscription - several years ago - the subscription rates were
very high. Now, for UK institutions at least, JISC have negotiated a
good rate for EEBO. LION, which is text based and *would* sit
comfortably on my hard-drive (although mine may be bigger than
Gabriel's) still seems over-priced to me for what it is - a three-year
subscription is getting on for
