Subject: 14.2279 How to Use Gallica
Comment: Re: SHK 14.2279 How to Use Gallica
The massive store of texts at Gallica piqued my salivary glands, so I
followed Al Magary's simple tutorial which worked well, until I got to
the point of downloading the example text. The file was not in the
designated folder. The file name was something like 0050148 and the
files in the folder began numbering at 00502xx. Assuming I had gone
astray, I tried to locate the sought for prize. After some time and
frustration, I concluded that it just is not where it's supposed to be.
It was nevertheless possible to use the slower html download from the
file in my browser per instructions. I also tested the ftp download on a
random small file. Although my dial-up connection is slow, I have
downloaded many gigabytes through it in large chunks. Both of the
attempted downloads from Gallia nevertheless failed after hours of sweat
and tears, my dreams of bibliotechnical riches dashed. If the French
have some problem with George Bush, that's no reason to take it out on
the rest of us.
