All I know is that the Globe presentation of the Kinsmen was one of the
greatest experiences of my theatre-going life: side-splittingly funny
(Palamon and Arcite's rivalry) and chilling (The Jailer's Daughter). The
final moment of tragedy remains the only experience in my life when an
entire audience fell completely still and sobs and sniffles were heard.
So perhaps it is not the play that fails us when we think of it as
inferior, but our own expectations and the talents of our theatre
practioners which fail us when this little performed work is done.
