Peter Hyland asks whether Clare Asquith's 2001 TLS article on "The
Phoenix and Turtle" is not "at least as persuasive" as ours. Readers of
both articles must judge for themselves, but Clare Asquith expressed her
own view in a letter in the TLS on May 2, congratulating us on
"pinpointing the identities of the two martyrs in Shakespeare's 'The
Phoenix and Turtle'." She calls our "identification" of the Lines as the
phoenix and turtledove "wholly convincing", and goes on to add some
further considerations which now seem to her to support our reading.
