Dan,

If the ghost is Hamlet, Sr., but not the father of young Hamlet, then
the ghost can kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. It can dispose
of both Claudius and Claudius's son at the same time.

The case for an evil ghost, though not definitive, seems to me quite
strong.
