Subject: Emilia and Desdemona

What is the general thought (or anyone's personal thoughts) on how long
Emilia has been Desdemona's maid/gentlewoman. I have always assumed
they were long-time friends. This assumption was based on many years of
seeing the Barbary/willow/bedtime scene performed by young actresses.

But now it occurs to me that there is no reason for Des to have had any
association with Emilia before she married Othello. Is there any
textual evidence either way? WHY is Emilia serving Desdemona?? She has
a husband with a decent job, she doesn't need to work as a servant, does
she?

Thanks in advance,
(and BTW, thanks for all the responses to my WT queries)
Susan St. John.
