Subject: All Holinshed Online
Shakespeareans with a special interest in the history plays may like to
know that Penn's SCETI center has put their copy of the 1587 edition of
Holinshed's Chronicles online in its entirety in high-quality
facsimiles. The *temporary* URL is:
http://dewey.lib.upenn.edu/sceti/PrintedBooksnew/index.cfm?TextID=holinshed_chronicle&PagePosition=1
The biblio info is:
Holinshed, Raphael, d. 1580?. The Chronicles of England, Scotland and
Ireland. London : Printed by Henry Denham, at the expenses of Iohn
Harison, George Bishop, Rafe Newberie, Henrie Denham, and Thomas
Woodcocke, [1587]. In Horace Howard Furness Memorial (Shakespeare)
Library. Folio DA130. H7 1587.
Navigating the facsimiles is at least as easy as wielding Ellis' six
volumes. There are pull-down menus--a page index and a table of
contents--to help get around the unruly chronicle. Note, however, that
while the URLs are serial from 1 (Vol. I title page) to 2,880 (Vol. III
colophon), the displayed page data shows Penn's numbering for
non-paginated front and backmatter--e.g., "B3v"--and Holinshed's
numbering for pages in the various internal divisions of the chronicles,
with corrections as necessary--e.g., "174 (i.e., 198)."
You can view pages in any of four resolutions. Saving the pages as JPEG
images, the resolutions and approximate file sizes of a sample page of
Holinshed are:
1X (thumbnail): 37K
2X (default): 154K
4X: 565K
8X: 1937K
All of Holinshed at 8X would consume, hmm, 5.7GB.
You can choose to print what you see, with resolution of about 2X--but
the blackletter type is too small to read unless you already know what
it says.
