Perhaps Richard Burt's new monitor has distracted him from his usual
eagle-eyed survey of Shakespeare allusions in popular culture. A quite
extended one aired on Fox TV last night--a new series called "Skin."
None of the promotional material, to my knowledge, actually mentioned
"Romeo and Juliet," but it is an extensive "hommage" to Baz Lurhmann's
1996 film of "Romeo and Juliet," with numerous imitations of
establishing shots, frames, character types, music, sets, and other
visual motifs from that memorable film. The two feuding families are
those of an "adult entertainment" corporate head (Capulets) and an
ambitious, authoritarian DA (Montagues). The first episode got us more
or less to the balcony scene, loosely construed. As network primetime
fare goes, it was actually not bad. It's hard to see how they can
sustain it past another 3-4 episodes, though.
