Subject: Eternal Lines
Fans of Sting CBE will no doubt already have heard his interpretation of
Sonnet XVIII, the words of which from the basis of a new song 'Like a
Beautiful Smile' on 'Sacred Love' (2003). Appropriately, the entire
sonnet is reprised as a coda to the final track, so that, as in
Shakespeare's original, the word 'this' has a self-referential force.
'Consider me Gone' on 'Dream of the Blue Turtles' (1985) quotes
extensively from Sonnet XXXV (with 'cancer' for 'canker') while the
album 'Nothing Like the Sun' (1987) takes its title from Sonnet CXXX.
