Subject: Shakespop: Hamlet in "Doonesbury"
Doonesbury Sunday strip of June 8, 2003, features Shakespeare for who
knows what reason.
Dialogue:
Scene 1:
B.D.: You're up for *what* role?
Boopsie: Ophelia.
B.D.: But isn't she must younger than you?
Boopsie: That's why they call us actors.
Scene 2:
Sid (on phone): Tony, Tony! You're bustin' my chops here!
What's wrong with Boopsie in the role of Ophelia?
Tony (voice on phone): She's too old, Sid.
Sid: Old? C'mon! We'll send her in for Botox! Clear up those lines in
no time!
Tony: Botox actresses can't do drama. They lose the ability to frown!
Sid: So what? She can act around it!
Tony: Sid, the character's suicidal!
Sid: So turn it into a comedy!
Tony: A comedy? "Hamlet"?
Sid (alone): <sigh...>
Scene 3:
Sid (voice on phone): Sorry, babe, the script has problems.
Boopsie (on phone): "Hamlet" has problems?
