Last night on the American sit-com My Wife and Kids, the wife Janet is
put in charge of directing the kindergarden school play. Intent on
out-performing the young, good-looking Kindergarden teacher's production
of Hansel and Gretel the year before, Janet chooses Romeo and Juliet and
proceeds to put the kids through a form of theatrical boot camp. When
Janet becomes sick and convinces her husband Michael (Damon Wayans,
formerly of In Living Color) to take over, the production takes on a
decidedly kindergarden twist - with Romeo being attacked by ninjas
during the balcony scene, and with a newly devised happy ending when
Romeo slays the evil Cyclops.
The audition sequence included one young girl doing a very convincing
Juliet in the death sequence, followed by a comically low quality
performance of the same by Janet and Michael's own daughter ("I drink
from this orange juice box and I die").
Noah also tells me that this season's Oz will have an ongoing
Shakespeare thread as the inmates are planning to do a production of
Macbeth, which should run through many, if not all, of the current
season. He also informs me that the fellow cast to play Macbeth is
already dead. Live on MacDuff.
