Dear All,
Incidentally I suppose Brian Vickers may more likely have intended his
allusion to Pilate to be to Bacon's essay On Truth rather than Austin's
jesting allusion to it. The example nonetheless provides a very
interesting example of how one spectacular phrase seeps into different
layers of literature thus becoming more (a)illusive as it goes on.
Difficult for us stylometrists to track down - all history is a
palimpsest. Of course, the best use of Pilate in literature is by
Bulgakov. But we'll leave that to another day.
Cheers,
Marcus
