There seems to be a misunderstanding here. I found Gary Taylor's
article and Michael Wood's letter on the Guardian website and I posted
both pieces as contributions to the discussion of Michael's BBC series.
As far as I know neither man is a member of this discussion list.

C'mon, give the guy a break. At the back of his book Michael writes,
'On Shakespeare biography the indispensable starting point is the
brilliant Samuel Schoenbaum's Shakespeare's Lives (1993 edition); the
key documents are summarized in Samuel Schoenbaum, Shakespeare: A
Documentary Life (1975)'.

The TV version of In Search of Shakespeare has been available in the UK
in both DVD and VHS video (UK formats) since the series was first
screened last Summer. These are both available from www.amazon.co.uk.
According to Amazon's US website, www.amazon.com, a DVD version
(US/Canada format) is due for release there next week, 10th February
2004. Presumably this is being timed to coincide with the PBS broadcasts.
The TV programs are designed as mass entertainment (as the plays were),
and while Gary Taylor's comments about how Michael Wood "treks up some
ancient road" and looks out at the "amazing view from a hill in
Warwickshire", are quite valid, Micheal Wood's style of presentation
does make for watchable TV.
The TV programs only cover a fraction of the material in the book
itself. The book does describe Michael Wood treking up the ancient road
where the Shakespeare family originated, though we don't actually see
that in the TV program.
For those not offended by Michael Wood's style of living-history lesson,
and who would like to see that ancient road, and a few more of the
sights mentioned in the book, but not shown on TV, there are some photos
