It has been my long practice to analyse the plays as they come without
going into the question of coincidence. A strong accusation along these
lines is habitually levied against Thomas Hardy, coincidence or
causality being very attractive though not necessarily opposed issues I
also enjoy watching in the stage of life...It is very difficult for me
to sit in front of such an honorable board here today to account for
coincidences in the Shakespeare Canon! The lady Desdemona's
handkerchief, Mercutio's death, the exchange of swords belong to the
stories that we might have had, if Shakespeare had favoured a less
tragic vein, which fortunately he didn't!

My ten percent is always too short.
