After watching the third installment of Michael Wood's "In Search of
Shakespeare" last night, I can now see where some of the inferences
reflected in previous discussion of "Richard II" and the Essex rebellion
came from! Just before jumping into the never-never land of identifying
the Dark Lady, Wood incautiously assumed that Elizabeth's reference had
to be to Shakespeare's play, even emending the quote from Lambarde to
"streets and playhouses" rather than "open streets and houses." At least
he got the testimony from the Chamberlain's Men right.
