Subject: Seeking Source of Quotation on Shylock

Dear all,

I'm looking for the source of a quotation on Shylock. I had thought it
came from Lorna Hutson's _The Usurer's Daughter_, but apparently not. In
the passage, the writer refers to Shylock as "a castrated man or a weird
kind of mother," and as evidence for Shylock's maternal status, quotes a
comment from Solanio: "And Shylock for his own part knew the bird was
fledged, and then it is the complexion of them all to leave the dam."
Ring any bells? The usual search avenues haven't turned anything up. If
you'd prefer to respond offlist, the address is This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Thanks very much--

Suzanne Penuel
