I wonder if this is some kind of effort by what is sometimes called the
Christian Right (or fundamentalists). There is a lingering dread among
them that all intellectuals are leftists and thus either atheists or
such church-goers as don't deserve the title "Christian." They
periodically try to reclaim the intellectual high ground, but of course
they have to do so while remaining theologically correct.

Much could be told from the publishing house that is issuing this work
as a serious item rather than curiosity of social history.

For several years now, I have felt like someone born in the late 18th
century who was watching the shadows of Victorian prudery close in. So
we are up (back?) to 1818 now?
