Subject: Shakespeare in Asia conference, performances, and films at
"Shakespeare in Asia" reflects the explosion of current interest in
global Shakespeares and fascinating international performances and
films. This four-day conference, live performances, and film screening
will be held at Stanford University April 1-4, 2004. All events are free
and open to the public.
Speakers include Ismail Merchant (addressing his life and work, before a
full screening of the film
Shakespeare Wallah), Ong Keng Sen (the Singaporean Shakepseare
director), Ania Loomba, Jyotsna Singh, Ryuta Minami, Yong Li Lan,
Anthony Guneratne, Noriyuki Sawa (the Japanese puppeter) and others.
Performances and films featured and discussed come from India, Japan,
China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Philippines, Vietnam, and elsewhere.

"Shakespeare in Asia" on the Stanford Community Day, Sunday April 4,
2004. Film screening, demonstration by Chinese opera actresses, face
painting by an Indian dancer, and workshop with the Japanese puppeter.
