I can add one more piece of anecdotal evidence. I went to an Episcopal
church as a child in California (in the 60s too) and we read the King
James. Never thought that hearing it and reading it made reading the
Classics Illustrated Shakespeare comics easier, but perhaps it did (and
vice versa). I remember hating the move from the King James to a modern
translation (Good News for Man, or something like that) when I was a
young teenager.
