The trouble with all this Shakesbeer stuff is that the plays do not
honor this tipple. There are only half-a-dozen references to beer and
ale in the Henriad, mostly indirect, and none in *Wiv*; Hal and Poins
make slighting remarks about "small beer" at the beginning of* 2H4* 2.2,
but Falstaff never names the stuff. Sack, indeed, good sherris sack, is
another matter - 40 occurrences in the 3 plays in which the fat knight
waddles the stage, mostly in connection with him. But one halfpenny
worth of beer to this intolerable deal of sack? I'd be curious to know
if there is a Falstaff brand sherry out there, and if so, where on the
sweet-dry scale it appears.

Vinously,
Dave Evett
