In running a similar Shakespeare course for non-specialists I tried to
select plays which offered some fairly obvious thematic links, so that
students would be invited/compelled to make comparisons (their A-level
experience at school tends to be of single plays intensively studied and
this is one way of getting them to look at more general issues). So
Romeo and Juliet was paired with A Midsummer Night's Dream, Richard II
with Julius Caesar and Othello with A Winter's Tale. It seemed to work
effectively. There are of course many other possible pairings/groupings
which would have the same sort of effect.
