Subject: The New Shakespeare: A Writer and His Readers
Call for Papers:
The New Shakespeare: A writer and his readers
A One-Day Conference on "The Return of the Author in Shakespeare Studies"
Plenary Speakers: Lukas Erne, Gary Taylor, and Stanley Wells.
The Shakespeare Programme at Lancaster University and Manchester
University Press will be hosting a one-day conference on Saturday 3 July
2004.
The possibility that Shakespeare did not write primarily for theatre
audiences but with readers in mind has far-reaching implications for the
study and performance of his plays. The aim of this conference will be
to situate the emerging idea of Shakespeare as a literary artist in
relation to his own representation of writing and reading. The
conference will take place in the historic Shire Hall of Lancaster Castle.
Proposals are invited for papers of up to 25 minutes. They may be made
by e-mail and should include an abstract of 200-300 words. The deadline
for submissions will be 7 June 2004. Proposals should be addressed to
Dr. Jane Rickard, Department of English & Creative Writing, Bowland
College, Lancaster University, Lancaster LA1 4YT (e-mail:
