Subject: Spirit Guide

The spiritual paragons of heaven, purgatory and the other place who were
weaving within the recent Hamlet Ghost thread may find some further
saintly breath with which to cool each other's porridge in a recent
publication:

Beliefs and the Dead in Reformation England. Peter Marshall. OUP. (0 19
820773 5)

However, its devil of a price will test any faith and try the patience
of angels. At fifty pounds sterling the spirit may be willing but the
wallet weak.

(As I type this an advert arrives in the mail for The Automobile
Association - Key Guide - London. I do not recommend it. The guide to a
South Bank Walk begins at The Houses of Parliament, past National
Theatre, Gabriel's Wharf and the Oxo Tower, etc. At the Tate Modern one
is sent across the Millennium Bridge to St Paul's with nary a mention of
that strange little house with the thatched roof but two steps beyond.
And it doesn't even feature in the rotten painting that illustrates the
walk. Philistines!)

Best,
G.
