Subject: Crowning Prince George
Most commentators on the Dubya-Henry V connection, including Nicholas
Kristof in today's NY Times, never mention that John Kerry actually
played Henry in a production while he was in prep school (reported on
extensively in the NYT a couple months ago). The lines quoted by Kristof
as exemplifying anti-war sentiment could well be used by the Democrats
right about now, it seems to me.
But I like Kristof's concluding remarks, which probably are not shown in
the abstract:
"Instead, Mr. Bush emulates Coriolanus, a well-meaning Roman general and
aristocrat whose war against barbarians leads to an early victory but
who then proves so inflexible and intemperate that tragedy befalls him
and his people.
Unless Mr. Bush learns to see nuance and act less rashly, he will be the
Coriolanus of our age: a strong and decisive leader, imbued with great
talent and initially celebrated for his leadership in a crisis, who
ultimately fails himself and his nation because of his rigidity,
superficiality and arrogance."
