Hope it's not too late to alert Shaksper to Julianne Caesar playing in
the Midtown Theatre Festival in NYC. In this new play by David Starkey,
a production of Julius Caesar at a women's college in southern
California spills over into the women's lives: betrayal, murder, and
suicide. Yes, it's a black comedy, and the contrast of teen-speak with
Shakespeare's language adds to the effect. A couple of reviewers have
tried to identify the genre--campedy, as in camp tragedy? For a
Shakespeare-loving playgoer, that's not the point. These young women,
for all their 'like' and 'totally' talk, take Shakespeare seriously. See
it if you can! Company: OverDrive Productions. Remaining performances:
July 25, 26, 28. Ticket information on nytheatre.com and ticketmania.com.
Future productions include one in Santa Barbara, California, September
9, 10, and 11.
