According to the NYT "Google Says It Doesn't Plan to Change Search
Results" 13 April 2004, C2, Google search results rely on a complex set
of algorithms that ranks sites based on the number and quality of links
to them. Google only removes illegal sites from its rankings. The
article explains how that some sales units manipulate linkings so that
their site will move near the top of the Google search list, etc.
