Subject: A Query: MLA's Variorum Project

This is a friendly supplement to David Kathman's generous attempt to
answer the initial query about the possibility that MLA's New Variorum
Shakespeare might be published electronically.

Perhaps the best source of information about MLA's plans to encode the
NVS is Dr. David Nicholls, Director of MLA book publications. However, I
can report that this winter a new NVS <Winter's Tale> edited by Robert
K. Turner and Virginia Haas will be published in book and electronic
forms, and that Standish Henning's NVS <Comedy of Errors> is in press
right now, due for publication in the same dual format in 2005, with
Richard Knowles's monumental <King Lear> to follow shortly. Although
nothing's been published in the series since Marvin Spevack's <Antony>
in 1990, there is a lot of work in the pipeline. Development of the
electronic format has taken time.

co-general editor (with Richard A. J. Knowles) of the NVS
