Subject: Oz Case

Dear Colleagues,

Once more we are calling upon friends and supporters of Prof. Avi Oz of
the University of Haifa to lend their voices in an appeal to University
authorities of the recently ratified decision to remove him from his
post in the Drama Dept. and to dismiss a number of associated untenured
faculty. Our statement is given below, along with the names and
addresses of the officials reviewing the decision.

As Shakespeare scholars and critics, we are deeply concerned about
recent decisions taken at Haifa University which have the effect of
removing Prof. Avi Oz from his post in the Drama Department, dismissing
a number of untenured faculty, and endangering the continued work of the
department. The Drama Department under the leadership of Prof. Oz has
enjoyed an international reputation for its artistic creativity and its
fostering of collaboration between the Jewish and Arab communities of
Israel. While we are not close to the specifics of the situation, we
want to emphasize that the removal of Prof. Oz and associates from the
department represents a significant loss to the international drama
community, and we urge you to use your authority to safeguard academic
freedom and due process in what has clearly become an emotional and
contentious situation deserving of the most scrupulous and dispassionate
review.

Sincerely,
Hugh Grady (Arcadia University)
Michael Neil (University of Auckland)
Gail Paster (Folger Institute)
Charles Whitney (Univ. of Nevada--Las Vegas)

The Rector's decision on a final appeal is scheduled for June 9. Emails
and faxes should be sent to him and to the President at the following
addresses as much before that deadline as possible.
