I went to the Globe and saw Much Ado in May. I have to say that the
production of Much Ado blew me away. I couldn't believe how good it was,
and I had been very skeptical about an all female production. The reason
I was skeptical was because I went to an all-female college during my
undergrad and saw several bad all-female productions of different plays
and never enjoyed any of them -- perhaps because they were women I knew
and I wasn't able to disassociate the person from the action or maybe
(probably) it was amateur acting. At any rate, I very much enjoyed the
play -- especially Jocy Lawrence who played Benedick. I'm a fan of hers
from seeing her on "Whose Line Is It Anyway," and was delighted to see
her doing Shakespeare.

On a side note, I also so RSC's Macbeth and Trevor Nunn's Hamlet while
we were in England. Much Ado rose high above these productions to be the
very best play we saw in England. The other two productions had their
merits, but neither one was as satisfying.

Cheers,
Marcia Eppich-Harris

Ian Jordan asks...

 >Anybody else been to the Globe this year?

No, but I have a ticket for Measure for Measure in August. Having never
seen MFM performed, I'm very interested in how they'll play the ending.

Because reading the play left me with a very nasty taste in my mouth.
Just when it looked like poor Isabella was finally going to get her
revenge on evil rapist Angelo, she was forced by the Duke to let him
off. And if this wasn't enough, the Duke then started to harass her too!

Isabella has no lines at the end so we don't know how she reacts to the
Duke's marriage proposal, but if Sophie Thompson takes Mark Rylance's
hand at this point, I shall boo loudly.

Ian Jordan notes, vis a vis, audiences

"Mmm...Interesting point-when is a theatregoer not a theatregoer? When
it is a tourist."

Yes, but aren't we always tourists?

Cheers,
don
