Absolutely, we all applaud the new digital Shakespeare....I
guess....even though the process takes Shakespeare another generation
away from the stage.

Professionals in any number of endeavors are trying to learn how to
translate into the digital domain. How do you best produce The
Washington Post on line? How do you make a digital piano
indistinguishable from a Steinway?

I question the use of terms like "digital surrogate" because they have
to be explained to thoughtful people with "query potential" who might be
outside the small circle of developers on a particular project.

Wouldn't a printout of SLATE, the on-line magazine, be a "digital
surrogate?"
