In Around the Globe (issue 27) Daniel Hahn cites Liza Pickard's
Elizabeth's London.

(My synopsis) A visiting Venetian was shocked to find a common game
involving young men throwing young women to the ground and only letting
them up after a kiss. Apparently they kissed a lot.

This may appeal to your PAC's if not your director.
