Shakespeare's wife signed her name with an "X" so the assumption is that
she was not able to read.

FYI: One of my many points that Alastair Fowler challenges Greenblatt on
in his TLS review of WILL IN THE WORLD is Greenblatt's assertion that it
is "likely" that Anne Hathaway could not read or write.
