Subject: A Claudius Question

Abigail Quart writes: "It seemed to me that Gertrude is denying that
anything has changed."

Sure. Old Hamlet is away (as usual), and she's boffing Claudius (as
usual). Not much has changed from Gertrude's point of view.

I might add that Old Hamlet, whatever his motivations, and Polonius
certainly do not seem to be model father figures. Between them, they
help destroy the love between young Hamlet and Ophelia. This is a play
where the older generation sacrifices the younger, and the end result is
that a young man (Fortinbras) takes over, but with the value system of
the older, not the younger, generation: land and personal honor (and
perhaps revenge) are the chief goods. I hardly think Shakespeare would
agree.

Whatever Bill Arnold thinks, the fathers in this play have a lot to
answer for, IMHO.

Raging over Claudius, snarling against women: Dr. Arnold, is it possible
that you need to distance yourself a little from this play?
