Sorry this is a bit laggard. Richard W. Bailey's *Images of English: a
Cultural History of the Language* (Ann Arbor: University of Michigan
Press, 1991) is probably too sophisticated for your students, but is a
valuable resource for somebody preparing to teach the subject--full of
intriguing stuff.
