Laura Bush wants to take Shakespeare to US gangland

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Laura Bush, the wife of the US president, wants to
take arms against a sea of illiteracy by enticing gangland boys with the
works of William Shakespeare.
Bush, a former librarian who is now a strong literacy activist, lauded
taking characters such as Lady Macbeth from Stratford-on-Avon to Los
Angeles barrios during an interview with US talk show host Jay Leno late
"Will boys really want -- Shakespeare, come on," Leno questioned.
"They actually love it," Bush replied, saying that she intended to visit
a program that uses Shakespeare plays to hook children on reading and
acting. "Think about Shakespeare. It's bloody. All those things that
boys might like."
"See, I couldn't see myself -- 'Hey, you gang-bangers, come on over here
for some Shakespeare'," Leno responded. "Seems like it would be tricky
Bush's remarks came as she lamented a lack of worthy male role models,
including men teachers, for American youth. The first lady told of
children giving President George W. Bush advice that included eating
more macaroni and cheese; wearing "fancy clothes" such as slippers, and
simply staying alive.
