Subject: That "worm"

Why is there such a to-do over the interpretation of the "worm" here as
phallic (Mr. Whigham here has brought the matter into modern focus with
his recalling Dylan Thomas' "The Force...") - or as anything else that
comments on the unfortunate lives of these two regal lovers? An
interpretation of any part of any work is governed by its consonance
with the larger argument of it. The larger argument having many
dimensions, there can usually be several "meanings" of a part of it.
And are not the multiple possibilities of meanings the very stuff and
richness and mystery of art?
