Indeed it does.  I received a more elaborate and obvious set of term
paper topics/exam questions from this chap, as others on the list may have.

I was too busy to give him the standard lecture on not using Shaksper as
a cheat sheet, so I just deleted it.  Hopefully, someone else read him
the riot act.

Dear Ms. Quagliata,

I think that I have grasped the connection in answer to your astute
question of how a Jew in dispersion, persecuted by tenets of the church
would make a similar statement than might an American Indian whose
people were being enslaved by Europeans.

In both cases they were strange - to their adversaries, although in the
one case the strange beings were refugees while the persecutors were
indigenous and in the other the strangers were indigenous and the
persecutors had arrived from a distance.  So then why would Europeans
view strangers unfit for freedom and perhaps even non-human, as Shylock
asks?  It is here that universalism plays its part. For no matter if is
the universal church or imperialism, the mind set of the Europeans was
that people not included into their family of universal values, as they
understood,  whenever confronted, had to be conquered.

Times have changed so please do not think that I believe that the same
attitudes now apply.
