Hilton Kelliher wrote about the James epitaph in a letter to the editor
in the 22 May 1986 *London Review of Books*, where he noted that the
poem (unattributed) appears in the 1633 edition of Stow's *Survey of
London*, edited by Anthony Munday and Humphrey Dyson. There it is said
to have existed as a monumental inscription in the church of St. Andrew
by the Wardrobe, where Elias James was buried. Stanley Wells and Gary
Taylor discuss the epitaph on p. 458 of *William Shakespeare: A Textual
Companion* (1987), summarizing both Hotson's and Kelliher's findings,
and give a short collation of differences between the two versions.

There is a brief discussion in William Shakespeare: A Textual Companion,
by Stanley Wells, Gary Taylor et al, Oxford, Oxford University Press,
1987, p. 458. (This volume of course discusses all the texts reprinted
in the Norton edition.)
