Subject: "Knight of the Burning Pestle" in Marin County
The San Francisco Chronicle gives an iffy review to the Marin
Shakespeare Co.'s production of Beaumont & Fletcher's rarely performed
"Knight of the Burning Pestle," the play-within-a-play-within-a-play.
Director Robert S. Currier "attempts to amplify the comedy by making it
more contemporary and much more zany. He's streamlined the text,
excising the more esoteric material, and replaces the arcane local
references with Marin equivalents and the many songs with snippets of
rock, country, pop, show and even calypso tunes--generally to good
effect. He emphasizes the artificiality by staging it on a comically
exaggerated cutout theater set (by Bruce Lackovic). Less successful is
his notion of turning the 'London Merchant' company into a clown troupe,
despite the outrageously colorful and wildly inflated or leotard-sleek
costumes of Michael Berg..." More at
