I can't quite agree with Larry about WT, though perhaps we saw different
performances. The production is indeed marred greatly at the outset by a
flat and monochromatic Leontes whose "Too hot! Too hot!" made the
audience laugh. (But then, the Globe audience will laugh at anything,
the saying goes. They certainly did here.) Most of the minor roles that
make the pastoral setting work well were effective, I thought. Some nice
business at the feast (juggling and such). However, when Perdita and
Florizel arrived at the Sicilian court dressed in white satin and red
ribbons, they looked like very bad candy. (The costumes otherwise were
terrific.) Paulina was quite fine (a role usually marred by screeching).
Her indictment of Leontes was the high point of the play. Perhaps Larry
sees more good theater than I get to; I'd give the Globe WT a decent B.
