SOUTH JORDAN, Utah (AP) -- Shakespeare courses in the state's largest
school district may no longer be offered.

Jordan District auditors have found that a Shakespeare class doesn't
sufficiently advance the state core curriculum. They also found they do
NOT boost students' chances for jobs, college, human development or
improved test scores.

The district will have a year to examine it and strengthen Shakespeare
or cancel the courses.

Twenty-three other courses, including interior design and power lifting,
could also be canceled after the district's audit.

A year ago the State Office of Education asked school districts to look
at class offerings and reconsider those lacking strong ties to the state
core curriculum.

The committee plans to evaluate select courses every year.
