Subject: King John Again
Good grief! Is there no limit to the critical metaphysics of
Shakespeareans? Reducing and then twisting King John's profound
anticatholicism into an 'apparent...rhetoric' that's really aimed at
'the misuse of its legal powers by the English Protestant church
hierarchy' (Sweet Sweet Sweet Poison, Peter Farey, June 10 2005) is an
affront both to history and the most elementary facts of the play. Read
the bleeping text, won't you? Come back, Leavis, all is forgiven.
