Apologies for being slow to respond to this thread.

The 18th-century Shakespeare Ladies' Club has been dealt with in an
article by Emmett L. Avery, "The Shakespeare Ladies Club," Shakespeare
Quarterly 7 (1956): 153-58, as well as in Michael Dobson's excellent
book. Concrete details about the Club are frustratingly difficult to
find but I have written about them in my PhD thesis on women's responses
to Shakespeare in the long eighteenth century (currently in progress).
The Club was not a reading group but a movement to get more Shakespeare
staged in the patent theatres during the period. I'd be interested to
hear from anyone else working on these Shakespeare Ladies.

Best,
Fiona Ritchie
