Plays never speak for themselves. If we humans don't read and/or act the
plays, they are indeed speechless. They don't tell us what they mean.
And we must of necessity read plays in the present -- with all our
present preoccupations. I find it hard to think about Shakespeare's
Henry V without thinking about our Imperial President.
