This is, of course, the sine qua non of all dramatic and narrative art, 
once the encrusted centuries of "catharsis", "self-expression", 
"realism", "Ibsenism" and "socialist realism", "post-modernism", and all 
other such accretions have been scraped away. Sometimes it seems hard to 
remember that.

The actor /does/, after all, have to have charisma. But as to his looks 
-- that's why the good Lord above gave us greasepaint and spirit gum.
